In this first chapter of I Corinthians, Paul explains that the church members there are divided by whom they say they are following - whether it be Paul, Apollos, Cephas or Christ Himself. Paul writes to these Corinthians that they are not to follow man, but God. He then goes on to explain how to the Jews the preaching of Christ is a stumbling block, and to the Greeks it is foolishness. I think in many ways todays society is much like the Greeks of Paul's day. Much of our society thinks of themselves as enlightened, and to them, we who believe in Christ are thought of as foolish. They call the Bible a book of mythical stories and say that only foolish people would believe in what the Bible says. They think that Christianity is based on archaic fairytales and that the God of the Bible is man-made. But look what Paul tells us in verses 24 and 25, that to those of us who are called by the Spirit, Christ is the power and wisdom of God. He goes on to say that even the foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of men, and that God's weakness is stronger than men. According to Paul, who is speaking only what the Spirit is telling him, the wise and mighty men are not called to God, but that God rather chooses the foolish and the weak to call to Himself. I believe this is what Jesus was meaning when he said the first shall be last and the last shall be first. I believe this is exactly how society will continue to be like until we are called home. Once the Church is removed from the world, then those who denied Christ will realize it was they who were the foolish all along.
