Happy Friday brethren, peace and grace unto you in the name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I hope you have enjoyed this week's readings as much as I have. Romans is always so uplifting to read - one of my favorite books of the Bible.
In chapter 11 there is a small section of scriptures I'd like to talk about. In those verses Paul is revealing another of the mysteries through the Holy Spirit's direction. Let's read Romans 11:25-27 before I go on:
There's a few good points in these verses. First, we are told a partial blindness has been put on Israel for a designated time. Where he says 'fulness of the Gentiles be come in' is saying that Israel's partial blindness will not end until the very last Gentile receives salvation - basically the last person to be saved during the church age. Now I know it doesn't say so here, but I believe that as soon as this last Gentile is saved that the rapture is going to take place, and that it is immediately following the rapture that the partial blindness of Israel will be removed. I believe that is why the very next verse says 'all Israel shall be saved', because God will not deal with Israel again until the church has been taken out of the way, which does not happen until we are raptured out of this world. Anyway, this is not really the main point I wanted to discuss, I just find it an interesting piece of scripture that God reveals to us here.
What I really want to talk about is the last verse I mentioned, verse 26, where Paul writes that all Israel shall be saved. If you remember from last week's study, Paul was talking about the sovereignty of God when he quotes Isaiah 10:22 and says 'Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved' (Romans 9:27)
So hold on a moment, is there a contradiction in those two verses? Isaiah says a remnant will be saved, which makes sense when compared with Revelation chapter 7 where John writes about the remnant of Israel - these are the 144,000 converted Jews that will be God's witnesses during the tribulation period. And this is not the only place in scripture where we are told about a remnant of Israel being saved, so why does Paul write 'all Israel shall be saved' in Romans 11:26? I believe the answer is found in Galatians chapter 6:
Here in Galatians Paul is talking about the new creature - a reference to salvation - and there in verse 16 he says this salvation is upon the 'Israel of God'. So who is this 'Israel of God'? Is it the entire nation of Israel - is he talking about every living Jewish person? Go back to chapter 11 in our readings this week and Paul will tell us who this is in Galatians who he is talking about when he says 'Israel of God'.
And there is the remnant. When Paul mentions the Israel of God in Galatians 6:16 he is talking about this remnant in Romans 11:5 - they are the remnant of believing Israel chosen by grace, as opposed to the false brethren among the Jews who were seeking to be justified by the works of the law. So what I believe is that when, in Romans 11:26, Paul writes 'all Israel will be saved', he is referring to this Israel of God, not the entire nation of Israel as a whole - but a remnant, just as both the books of Isaiah and Revelation corroborate.
