The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans, Chapters 1-3 Read It Online
Written from Corinth in A.D. 60 This study is now closed.
Due to its complex doctrinal nature , I highly recommend you read this introduction written by John MacArthur before you begin reading the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans.

Good morning fellow believers. So, wow, there is so much packed into these first three chapters of Romans, I can't possibly cover everything Paul gives us. I'm just going to pick a few points to talk about and maybe someone else will cover some of the other points. Paul spends a good portion of his introduction of this letter explaining to the roman believers that he greatly wishes to visit them so he can preach the gospel to them in person. Verse 16 is key to what he is going to make clear to the romans. Please take a moment to read it again before continuing on here. The key word in this verse is salvation. Looking at the Hebrew and Greek words for salvation, we find that there are three tenses for the word salvation; (1) The believer has been saved from the guilt and penalty of sin and is safe. (2) The believer is being saved from the habit and dominion of sin. (3) The believer is to be saved in the sense of entire conformity Christ. Paul is also telling the romans (as he does in all his teachings to the Gentiles) that we obtain salvation by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. He says "...it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:16) Does Paul tell us that we have to believe in Jesus and go to church every Sunday? No. Does he say anything at all after he tells us we must believe? No. Paul is perfectly clear in this verse; we obtain salvation when we believe - by faith alone we are saved, praise God! Now, in verses 28-32, we get an answer to why is there so much wickedness in the world. In verse 28, Paul says, "And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge," or in others words, these wicked people do not acknowledge that God exists. So what does God do in response? Going back to verse 28, Paul says, "...God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient" (Romans 1:28) What is a reprobate mind? The definition of reprobate refers to words like unprincipled, wicked, shameless. The Calvinistic definition says a reprobate person is someone that is predestined to damnation! So clearly these are some pretty hard-hearted people God is referring to here. In the other half of the verse God tells us what He sees these wicked people doing. They are doing things "that are not convenient". The word convenient in the Greek translates to becoming. So what God is seeing is people doing things that are not becoming of His righteousness - not becoming of the Christian life. In verses 29-31, Paul tells us who these people are seen to be. One of these characteristics is 'haters of God'... whoa! How evil does one have to be to be considered a hater of God? Going down Paul's list it's easy to see why God wants us to separate ourselves from the world. As Paul conveys in 2 Corinthians 6:17-18, "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."
