Anyone who has spent any amount of time reading the gospels will be very familiar with most of the chapter readings this week. The temptation of Christ and the sermon on the mount are some of the more popular sections of the gospel, even amongst non-believers in many cases.
It kind of makes it hard to decide what to post about because everyone has heard many sermons and probably read some commentaries on these passages. I attempted to go about my reading this week with a blank slate, trying hard to put to the side anything I've previously been taught about it.
I find these particular verses from chapter five very interesting. When you think about it, these verses and the others like it that I did not include above are at the very core of being a Christian. To me, this is Jesus explaining to us exactly why He had to come to earth and die for our sins - God's standards are way beyond any standards man is capable of living up to.
It's like He is saying, look, these standards you are living by since Moses, they are admirable, but let me tell you about God's standards. And after He gets done you can't help but think, how in the world is anyone going to make it to heaven?! And I honestly believe if it wasn't for the blood that Jesus shed on the cross, God would have wiped out the human race by now, just as it was in Noah's day.

I have a lot of verses to reference for this post so I'm not going to quote them here, I'll just let you look them up. They are Matthew 7:15-28 and I think these particular verses are so important today because what Jesus talks about with false prophets and when He talks about the people who will say Lord, Lord haven't we done many wonderful works in your name - all of that feels so timely, maybe it was that way for every generation, but to me it just seems like it's out of control today. False prophets, yeah, we got plenty of those, and a good percentage of them are on television. I fell pray to many false prophets in my early Christian years, mostly because that's how I was raised in the faith until one day it just felt all wrong in my spirit.
I really feel strongly that verses 21-23 of chapter 7 is happening right before our eyes. So many of the body of Christ are falling away and buying into the lie that's being sold everywhere today. Many ways to get to heaven? No, sorry, there isn't, and anyone who calls themselves a Christian and thinks that simply aren't real Christians. I don't know if those people are not reading the bible or if they just aren't paying close enough attention to what they are reading, but if you read the bible with any understanding at all I don't see how anyone could come to such a conclusion. Just the gospels alone tell us over and over again that Jesus is the only way. Sadly, in these last days it will only get worse, as Paul tells us in 2 Thessalonians.
